A comics-centric workshop for talented aspiring Southeast Asian creators to immerse themselves in an intensive knowledge sharing and networking session over the span of 2 and a half days.

Have you ever wanted to seek out like-minded comic folks to pick their brains for advice, or just geek out about making comics? If your answer is yes, we have good news for you!
The very first Weekend Comics Workshop, an initiative by Charis Loke in collaboration with Unnamed, will be held at Rimbun Dahan in Kuang, Malaysia on the 24th till 26th May 2019! 6 talented aspiring Southeast Asian comic artists will be selected to immerse themselves in an intensive knowledge sharing and networking session over the span of 2 and a half days.
We’re looking for comic artists aged 18 and above residing in all SEA countries (that means Brunei, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam), who are working to elevate their comic-making practise, whether it takes the form of an ambitious long-form comic project or professional comics practise.

I WANT TO PARTICIPATE!
We only have 6 slots for our Weekend Comics Workshop this time around, so we predict that applications might get a bit competitive. Just put your best foot forward!
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
The ideal participant will be a Southeast Asian comic artist who is looking to elevate their craft, whether it takes the form of an ambitious long-form comic project or professional comics practise.
We will be evaluating participants based on the merit of their prior work (published and unpublished), and the nature of their own projects which they would like to bring to the workshop.
ELIGIBILITY
To apply for this Weekend Comics Workshop, you must be aged 18 and above and:
- A citizen of a SEA country (Brunei, Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam)
- Be able to communicate in English (for the purposes of the workshop)
- Be able to get yourself to Rimbun Dahan on the evening of 24th May 2019
- Be able to make your own way home at the end of the workshop on 26th May 2019
APPLICATION PROCESS
HOW
Our application process is rather straightforward really. We just want you to compose a 2-page letter to Charis Loke, the current Artist-In-Residence at Rimbun Dahan, detailing your experience making comics and why you’d like to attend this workshop (also mentioning the project you have in mind to bring along). It should begin with ‘Dear Charis’ and no longer than 2 A4 pages. Your letter could be done any way you like - a poem, a collage, or (cough) even a comic, whatever you feel best represents you and your work.
Scans or digital artworks of your letters (300dpi, jpeg file) should be sent to unnamed.asiateam@gmail.com with the title ‘Weekend Comics Workshop Application’ with your full name.

Please include your contact details in your application e-mail (to which you will attach your 2-page ‘Dear Charis’ letter). We will need your full name, your phone number, and postal address.
IMPORTANT DATES
Applications are open now until 30th April 2019. Results of the application process will be announced on the Unnamed website and social media platforms, as well as via participants’ emails on 5th May 2019. We know it’s a tight deadline, but please believe us when we say it’s the best we could do!
WHAT EXACTLY DOES THIS WORKSHOP COVER IF I GET SELECTED?
The 6 selected participants will be provided 2 nights’ stay at Rimbun Dahan for the duration of the Weekend Comics Workshop, in the company of our invited guests who will be conducting workshops and talks.
