Rimbun Dahan is located in Kuang, Selangor, and is the home of architect Hijjas Kasturi and his wife Angela. Set on fourteen acres outside Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the compound of Rimbun Dahan is a centre for developing traditional and contemporary art forms. It features buildings designed by Hijjas Kasturi, as well as two early 20th century traditional Malay houses from Perak and Penang, in an indigenous garden environment. The grounds also house multiple artist studios, a dance studio, an artist lounge and library, and underground art gallery.

Rimbun Dahan has graciously offered to host the participants, invited guests, and organizers for the duration of the workshop. Surrounded by a lush natural environment, we are almost certain there’s no better place to spend a weekend away to talk, create, and consume comics.

GETTING THERE

Rimbun Dahan is nested in the heart of Kuang (GPS Coordinates: 3.219777,101.53311). The closest MRT station is the Sungei Buloh MRT, which is located about a 16 minute drive away. We will provide further instructions on transport arrangements to participants after they have been chosen.

ACCOMODATION

Workshop participants will call Rumah Uda Manap their home during the workshop. It is a refurbished kampung house from Perak, fitted with all basic facilities participants will require, including a kitchen, dining area, and toilets.

FOOD

Participants will be expected to pay for their own meals. There are some warungs (small restaurants) located along the stretch of roads around Rimbun Dahan where we can dine as a group, but for meals provided by the workshop (all halal options) participants will be charged at cost. Feel free to pack your own snacks, though we can assure you that there will be no shortages on that front.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM

We know that two and a half days are barely enough to fit everything we’d like to do into what we hope this workshop will be. The goal of the workshop is to provide a space for aspiring SEA comic artists to forge friendships, nurture their ambitious comic projects, and spend time learning from our invited guests who will also be staying with participants for the duration of the workshop. Participants will be able to get feedback on their projects from fresh perspectives, in a respectful and thoughtful environment. While there will be a schedule to abide to, we want everyone to have fun as well, so there will be some time left unstructured for participants to mingle, read, draw, and even swim.

We believe this workshop is the first step in forging a vibrant collective SEA comics scene, and the community built through this workshop will only serve to develop the practise and sense of belonging of all involved.
